Handweaver Jennye Rebecca Owen is a studio artist who creates a line of handwoven clothing for women. Formerly a resident of Atlanta, she relocated to the mountains of North Carolina in 2006 after retiring from 35 years of teaching art.
Her first introduction to weaving came while student teaching. She attended a workshop in which each participant built a small loom for weaving placemats and runners. This workshop changed her life! Fascinated by the process of creating fabric, Rebecca returned to the University of Georgia for one quarter before graduating and enrolled in a weaving class. Shortly thereafter she bought her first loom. After several years of learning and experimenting with rugs and wall hangings, she took a class in woven wearables at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. From that point on she has worked exclusively creating handwoven garments. Her work continues to evolve through new color combinations, weave structures and garment styles.
Rebecca is a juried member of the Southern
Highland Craft Guild and the Piedmont Craftsmen. Garments with the Jennye Rebecca label are available through the Piedmont Craftsmen Shop in Winston-Salem, the Guild shop at the Folk Art Center in Asheville and the Guild shop in Gatlinburg. They are also sold at selected art shows and fairs and directly from the artist’s studio.
